Open Position – Lactation Consultant

We are hiring experienced outpatient IBCLCs with a positive outlook and passion for the profession.

  • The skilled clinician must have several years of experience in a variety of lactation circumstances.
  • Experience with different lifestyles and developmental stages preferred. Our clients are highly motivated and very diverse in age and ethnic background.
  • In addition to supporting normal variations in the breastfeeding dyad, the ideal candidate must demonstrate the expertise to discern when and which intervention is necessary, including the use of lactation equipment as needed.
  • Hours are flexible. Clients may schedule consultations at home or in our office.
  • Free training available if already certified.

Open Position – Shop and Administrative Assistant

Come join our team at the Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington! As a leader in lactation education and promotion, our mission is to advance breastfeeding and successful parenting throughout the DC metro area by providing free and low cost professional instruction to families in a supportive community space. We strive to fulfill our mission by providing expert-led classes and private consultations with Board Certified Lactation Consultants. We also offer a variety of other services including a breastfeeding boutique, off-site classes for low income populations, a nursing lounge and a milk depot. Our office is located just blocks from the orange/blue line, red line, and the main GW campus.

We are currently looking for a multi-tasking, highly motivated and responsible individual for our Summer Administrative Assistant positions. This position is ideal for those interested in small business, nonprofits, marketing, maternal and child health and/or retail. Candidates must be punctual, organized, committed to the mission, detail-oriented and must enjoy offering exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities include but may not be limited to:

  • Assist with customer service (appointment scheduling, answering phones, bra fittings, etc.)
  • Assist staff with program management
  • Other tasks as needed/interested

Open Position – Board President

As a leader in lactation education and promotion, the mission of the Breastfeeding Center of Greater Washington (“BCGW”) is to advance breastfeeding and successful parenting throughout the DC metro area by providing free and low cost professional instruction to families in a supportive community space.

Position

As a partner to the executive director and other board members, the Board President will support and sustain the work of BCGW, and provide governance leadership and strategic support.

Specific responsibilities include:

Leadership and Governance

  • Leading the Board and Executive Committee to carry out its governance functions
  • Ensuring the Board has approved policies to help ensure sound and compliant governance and management of the organization
  • Partnering with the Executive Director to lead the development and implementation of impact metrics
  • Assessing the performance of the Board and its committees
  • Partnering with the Executive Director to help ensure the Board’s directives, policies, and resolutions are carried out
  • Working with the Executive Director in cultivating and soliciting major foundation grants and individual gifts
  • Coordinating an annual performance review of the Executive Director
  • Setting priorities and creating agendas for meetings of the Board, and leading the Board’s strategic plan development and implementation
  • Serving as an ambassador of the organization and advocating its mission to internal and external stakeholders
  • Recruiting, interviewing and nominating board members while ensuring BCGW’s commitment to a diverse board that reflects the communities BCGW aims to serve
  • Scheduling, drafting agendas for, presiding over, and facilitating Board meetings
  • Ensuring that 100% of BCGW’s board members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity

Oversight

As a board member, approving BCGW’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities, including:

  • Duty of Care: ensuring prudent use of BCGW’s assets
  • Duty of Loyalty: ensuring that board resolutions and BCGW’s activities are advancing BCGW’s mission; Recognize and disclose conflicts of interest.
  • Duty of Compliance: ensuring that BCGW obeys applicable laws and regulations; follows its own bylaws; and that the nonprofit adheres to its stated mission.

Board terms

BCGW’s Board President (and board members) will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held monthly.

Qualifications

This is an opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the vision and values of BCGW. The selected Board President will bring leadership and governance skills, as well as a commitment to provide meaningful support to the executive director in growing BCGW.

Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • Executive leadership accomplishments in nonprofit, business or government sector
  • Experience as a nonprofit board member or board president
  • A commitment to and understanding of BCGW’s beneficiaries and mission, preferably based on experience
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills coupled with a natural affinity for public speaking
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of BCGW’s beneficiaries

Open Position – Board Treasurer

As a leader in lactation education and promotion, the mission of the Breastfeeding Center of Greater Washington (“BCGW”) is to advance breastfeeding and successful parenting throughout the DC metro area by providing free and low cost professional instruction to families in a supportive community space.

Position

The treasurer will offer guidance to the Executive Director in ensuring good fiscal planning, decision-making and oversight at a governance level.

Principle duties are to:

• Oversee the development of high level financial policies and their review by the board

• Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and its presentation to the board for review

• Ensure that the appropriate monthly or quarterly financial statements are reviewed by the board

• Ensure that the board regularly monitors the organization’s financial performance and alerts it to any important discrepancies between planned and actual figures

• Ensure that the organization maintains the appropriate financial books and records and that these are accurate and up-to-date

• Ensure that government tax filings and remittances are submitted on a timely basis

• Ensure that excess funds and reserves are properly held and invested

• Verify that donations are handled appropriately and that grants and service delivery contracts are accounted for in accordance with the requirements of funders

• Assists the Executive Director and board chair with the development and presentation of the annual report

• Present or co-present the organization’s financial report and recommend appointment or reappointment of auditor at the Annual General Meeting

• Helps, along with the Executive Director, keep the board informed of important financial events, trends, and issues relevant to the organization
