Ask the Pediatric Dentist: Myth Busters with Dr. Jonelle Anamelechi

Did you know that oral health and airway are connected? This month we are breaking myths with our Pediatric Dentist for 2024. Have questions? Don’t hesitate to ask. DM Dr. Anamelechi on Instagram @childrenschoicedentaldc

Understanding Pacifiers and Oral Development:

Myth: All Pacifiers Are Equal

Fact: Not all pacifiers are created equal. Orthodontically designed pacifiers can mitigate potential dental issues by supporting the natural development of a baby's oral structures. Choose wisely and opt for designs that align with your child's oral health and airway needs. My Favorites: MAM Pacifier, Ninni Pacifier, and Avent Pacifier

Mouth Breathing and its Consequences:

Myth: Mouth Breathing Is Harmless in Infants

Fact: Mouth breathing can signal underlying issues and impact facial growth. Contrary to the belief that it's harmless, chronic mouth breathing may lead to jaw development problems, decreased immunity, and poor oral health. Identifying signs early and seeking professional advice is crucial for comprehensive oral and airway health. Note: we don’t expect babies especially newborns to keep their mouths closed all the time but it should be something that parents are paying attention to.

Tongue Ties and Oral Function:

Myth: Tongue Ties Resolve on Their Own

Fact: Contrary to the misconception that tongue ties resolve naturally, they often persist  and can impact children in different ways and at different milestones. Early identification and potential corrective procedures are essential and don’t have to always be surgical. Consulting healthcare professionals who are trained appropriately ensures timely and effective interventions for optimal oral and overall development. A team approach may include : a pediatric dentist, chiropractor, OMT, lactation consultant, and/or feeding therapist

Holistic Nutrition for Oral and Airway Health:

Myth: Nutrition Only Affects Teeth

Fact: Nutrition goes beyond just teeth; it profoundly influences jaw development and airway development. A nutrient-rich diet supports healthy teeth and jaw growth. Parents should be aware that their child's overall well-being is closely tied to the holistic nutritional choices made during infancy and childhood. Using appropriate food and tooth friendly food selection also essential in teaching appropriate jaw movements, bone development, swallowing, sucking, and chewing patterns.

Proactive Oral Care Practices:

Myth: Baby Teeth Don't Require Early Attention

Fact: The belief that baby teeth don't need early attention is a misconception. Early dental checkups, starting around the age of one, provide insights into oral and airway development. Teaching proper brushing techniques from the first tooth and instilling good oral hygiene habits from an early age empower children to maintain a healthy smile and unobstructed airways throughout their lives.
