When to Replace Your Breast Pump Parts: A Guide for Pumping Parents

Happy March, Pumping Parents! If you’re using a breast pump regularly (at least once a day), keeping it in top condition is essential. Over time, wear and tear can affect the suction and efficiency of your pump– two preventable things you definitely don't want to struggle with on your breastfeeding journey. The good news? A little upkeep can make a big difference! Let’s go over when you should swap out those pumping pierces to keep everything running smoothly.

SMALL SILICONE PARTS

  • Includes: Valves*, Membranes

  • Replace Every: If you pump four or more times daily, replace every two to four weeks. For less frequent pumping, every two months is sufficient.

*noticing suction issues? Try replacing your valve– it might be the fix you need!

LARGE SILICONE PARTS

  •  Includes: Backflow protectors, diaphragms, pump seals

  • Replace Every: For those pumping more than three times daily, replace every three months. If pumping less frequently, every six months is recommended.

PLASTIC PARTS

  • Includes: Flanges, connectors, bottles

  • Replace Every: Replace these parts every six months, or sooner if you notice cracks, warping, or residue buildup that regular cleaning can't remove.

TUBING

When to Replace?

  • If cleaning* doesn’t remove residue

  • If mold is present

  • If it remains cloudy after washing

*Tubing should be cleaned with alcohol (no water), ONLY if it gets soiled or has condensation inside.

Reusing Old Parts?

Whether you’re a new or returning parent, we recommend purchasing a new kit of parts* for each baby. Even though pump parts are made from silicone and plastic, they can degrade over time, affecting performance and hygiene.

*Eco-Friendly Tip: Many plastic parts (bottles, connectors, flanges, tubing, and valves) can be recycled.

Taking care of your breast pump ensures a smoother, more efficient experience so you can focus on what matters most– your baby.
