Appointments

Here at the Breastfeeding Center we are highly committed to providing thorough and continued support throughout your perinatal years. Our board certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs) will meet you wherever you are in your journey, and will assist you as you define your own feeding goals. We’re dedicated to helping you meet whatever objectives you have in a nonjudgmental, nurturing and accepting manner. We have decades of experience supporting people from the prenatal stage through toddlerhood and weaning. Here’s a list of common and not so common concerns our consultants are well-versed in. We are also very committed to mentoring the next generation of lactation consultant and consider ourselves a teaching facility. Our lactation consultants often have interns working with them in consultations, in which case you get two brilliant minds working together!

We offer telehealth, in-office (DC, Arlington and Fairfax locations), and in-home lactation consultations. If you have any concerns about baby’s weight gain or latch, we recommend choosing an in-person option (either office or home). Many other concerns can usually be handled via telehealth if you prefer that option!

If you’d like to learn more about our staff before booking, you can read their bios here.
Because lactation appointment availability is scarce, our 24-hour cancellation policy will be firmly held. We urge you to reference the policy before booking.

Lactation Appointments

Billed directly to insurance if you have Aetna, BCBS/Carefirst, DC Medicaid or United/GEHA, otherwise $200 with assistance to bill your insurer. Your appt may consist of a health history of the dyad; a breast, nipple and oral anatomy assessment; a pre- and post-feed weight to determine milk transfer; discussion on calibrating supply; assessment of latch/positioning; assistance with breastfeeding aids/equipment; and a care plan to help you meet your breastfeeding goals. Follow up appointments are recommended weekly under 4-6 weeks old, and as determined by you and your LC beyond that. Billed to insurance if you have Aetna, BCBS/Carefirst, DC Medicaid or United/GEHA, otherwise $200 with with assistance to bill your insurer. Additionally, a $125 administrative Travel Fee applies to ALL Home Visits, regardless of whether the appointment itself is billed to insurance. Because this cost is administrative, it is not ever covered by insurance. Billed directly to insurance if you have Aetna, BCBS/Carefirst, DC Medicaid or United/GEHA, otherwise $200 with assistance to bill your insurer. Whenever possible, please have baby present for your telehealth appt. Your appt may consist of a health history of the dyad; a breast, nipple and oral anatomy assessment; discussion on calibrating supply; assessment of latch/positioning; assistance with breastfeeding aids/equipment; and a care plan to help you meet your breastfeeding goals. We often suggest telehealth appts for follow up questions between your in-person appts, or to get a head start on things if your first appt is more than 24 hours away.

Most families need a full consult for health history, anatomy, latch, positioning, etc. But the need for short "quick question" consults comes up fairly frequently too! If nursing/pumping is generally going well for you (no pain for you and baby is gaining weight well), you may consider a mini-consult for things like: flange fitting, medication questions, choosing a galactagogue/supplement, weaning, milk freezing/heating/storage, etc. Not sure? Book a full appt--you don't have to use it all.

Billed directly to insurance if you have Aetna, BCBS/Carefirst, DC Medicaid or United/GEHA, otherwise $200 with with assistance to bill your insurer. We especially suggest a prenatal appt if: you've already taken one of our classes still have questions; if you have had breast surgery, or you have flat or inverted nipples, a hormonal condition such as PCOS, infertility, thyroid issues, diabetes, or gestational diabetes; if you've had prior breastfeeding difficulty; if you are expecting multiples or a large baby; or if inducing lactation. Everyone could benefit from a prenatal appointment!

There are SO MANY pumps available now! And you can only get one pump covered by insurance, so the choice can feel high-stakes. This is a telehealth appointment with an IBCLC to review the pump options available to you, and to narrow down your choices to those that will serve you best for your lifestyle, your work, and your birth & lactation plans.

We believe expert lactation care should be affordable and accessible to all. Please read about our Insurance Coverage and Financial Assistance for Lactation Care.

If you have a special circumstance and would like assistance in choosing the right lactation consultant, please TEXT us at 202-293-5182.
