Happy World Doula Week!
This week (from March 22nd- 28th) is World Doula Week!
World Doula Week is during this time because it is the spring equinox, which represents the return of fertility in countless cultures.
World Doula Week began in Israel, with doula Ruti Karni Horowitz. While originally made to celebrate their own organization, collaboration with CAPPA (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) allowed the week to be celebrated across the world.
World Doula Week is an important celebration of doulas and their critical contributions to birth work including:
Closing the gaps in health care and improving the birth experience
Expanding advocacy in the birthing space
Enriching all birthworkers knowledge of the birth process and so much more
Emotional, physical, and safety support to families
Navigating between families and providers
Shortening the length of labor
Increasing breastfeeding initiation and continuation
Increasing mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
Reducing the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
Increasing new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn
Doulas have a unique position to support families like other providers can't. Doulas can navigate between families and providers and become a crucial part of a family's care team.
Here at The Breastfeeding Center, we have many doulas on our staff and are grateful for their expertise and their significant knowledge of the pre and postpartum periods!
